“There are a number of good books on San Francisco, but they all, in the end, just describe it; they do not explain it. Something makes San Francisco different from every other American City.” Bernard Levin, London Daily Mail

Whether you are visiting or live in San Francisco, what makes San Francisco different has drawn you here. And the explanation can be found in the great events and grand characters that shaped not only San Francisco’s unique history, but also American history.

Please join San Francisco historian and storyteller Peter Moylan on his walking tours and for his “live documentaries” to hear the stories that made San Francisco “Everyone’s Favorite City.”

Walking Tours

Our San Francisco walking tours were created to do something that no other San Francisco walking tour does: give you the entire history of San Francisco from native American village to the City we know today. In just two tours of less than two hours each, you will come away with the major events of and eras in San Francisco history, all told in depth, while you explore the City of today.

We include a generous mixture of anecdotes, humor, and quotes by and about some of San Francisco’s most colorful characters. The tour will also reveal the truth behind myths and legends that most San Franciscans believe are true.

Live Documentaries

San Francisco Walks and Talks’ “live documentaries” are entertaining, comprehensive, and concise stories of a specific time, place or event in San Francisco’s history. The format evokes the documentary styles of Ken Burns or “The American Experience.”

Historian Peter Moylan narrates the story, typically out of sight of the audience, while the audience focuses on the images on a screen. Just as in a documentary, the audience makes the connection between the images and the narration. This style engages the audience in the story as no “lecture” or “presentation” or “talk” could possibly do.
