President and Chief Executive Officer

Peter Moylan
Peter is a native of Long Island, New York.  After graduating from Hempstead High School, in 1965, he served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a military journalist.  Peter first saw San Francisco in 1967 on his way to Okinawa, where he served as Senior News Editor at Armed Forces Radio and Television. He stayed at the Marines Memorial Hotel, just 3 blocks from his current home.  “San Francisco was very much like New York City, just smaller and easier to live in,” says Peter.  He knew he would be back to stay.

In January 1970, shortly after discharge from the Marines, Peter left New York for San Jose, a small town surrounded by prune yards and orchards just 50 miles south of San Francisco, which 41 years later is the second largest city in California.  He started college and worked for a short time at the San Jose Mercury-News through 1974.  After 1½ years away from California, he moved into San Francisco in July 1976.  He worked in restaurants for a number of years, then returned to San Francisco State University in to complete a B.A. in Political Science in 1988.

From the late 1980s through the 1990s, Peter was active in San Francisco politics.  He served on the Board of San Francisco Tomorrow (SFT), an urban environment organization.  His greatest contribution was an idea for legislation promoted by SFT that eventually became the Waterfront Land Use Plan. Peter served on a 27 member citizens committee that helped guide the Port of San Francisco on waterfront development.  He also served on several campaigns for candidates for office and for ballot initiatives.

In 1997, Peter worked in marketing for the Trammell Crow Company (TCC), a global real estate company.   “I treasure my experience with TCC, the great people I worked with, and the business travel all over the U.S. as well as business trips to Dubai, England, and Japan.  It was a very special company,” Peter says.  (TCC was acquired by CB Richard Ellis.)

Also in 1997, Peter was walking near Union Square when he saw Jay Gifford giving his Victorian Home Walks Tour.  He realized immediately that walking tours were for him. He loves telling stories, loves history, and loves writing, all of which fit perfectly with walking tours.  He created San Francisco Then…and Now, in 1997 to offer visitors and San Franciscans the fascinating story of “Everyone’s Favorite City.”  Within the first few tours, San Francisco Magazine had given his tour 4 stars!

San Francisco Then…and Now became Walking Tours San Francisco in 2002.  Peter operated the tours from 1997 to 2004, until his hips gave out.  In 2006, he joined the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) as a grant writer.  Using the skills developed as a journalist and proposal writer at TCC, he helped raise millions of dollars in grants for a Family Resource Center dedicated to ending childhood poverty.  “The people who work at HPP are the real heroes in our society.  They turn around the lives of poor and homeless families, so the families become self sufficient and the children thrive and the community is improved.  Please visit the Homeless Prenatal Program website and give generously,” Peter urges.

Thanks to HPP, Peter had both hips replaced. He is now able to give his tours again. The roots of Peter’s “Live Documentaries” came when he was asked to give a talk to corporate management and employees about effective leadership using the example of Joseph Strauss, Chief Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. Turns out that Mr. Strauss had some flaws as a leader, but he was effective enough to overcome massive opposition to a bridge and become the man ultimately responsible for building the bridge. Peter used his skills writing news and special programs on Okinawa to create the unique approach he takes to telling the story of building the Golden Gate Bridge, Emperor Norton and, soon, the Summer of Love, with more to come.
