Historic Places and Things Unique to San FranciscoThe S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien at Pier 45, Fisherman’s Wharf. One of only two remaining World War II Liberty Ships. The O’Brien offers day-long and weekend cruises, and each year escorts in the ships for Fleet Week. Open most days for visiting. The Pampanito at Pier 45, Fisherman’s Wharf. A World War II submarine that sank a Japanese vessel, not knowing that British prisoners of war were aboard. The Pampanito rescued all of them. Open most days for visiting. The Walt Disney Family Museum is a collection of personal and professional artifacts of Walt Disney’s personal life, including first drawing of Mickey Mouse. It’s in the Presidio at 104 Montgomery, in a former barracks that borders on the parade ground. Walking ToursWe now have “competition” for the resident San Francisco expert on the life and times of Emperor Norton I. Joseph Amster has resurrected the Emperor in his new walking tour – “Emperor Norton’s Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine.” The Emperor himself will now be issuing his proclamations from time to time for our Live Documentary on Norton. History OrganizationsThe Marin History Museum is a marvelous museum in a Victorian bordering a park in San Rafael. They have great theme-oriented exhibits (in April, 2012, they had exhibits of Marin at War, the Golden Gate Bridge and a local newspaper.) BookstoresThe Argonaut Book Shop at 786 Sutter between Jones and Taylor is the city’s quintessential antiquarian bookseller. Focuses on early California history and the Amerian West.
